As part of its lecture series on the theme « Agroecological and Food Transition: International Perspectives, » the Centre for Living Agroecology and Food Systems (CLAS) is organizing a lecture.
Description of the conference
Chile faced widespread undernutrition in the early 1980s. Since then, rising incomes, increased participation of women in the workforce, and longer commuting times have created greater demand for convenient and ultra-processed foods. Today, Chile has one of the highest obesity rates in the world. To address these challenges, Chile has implemented policies such as a sugar-sweetened beverage tax and front-of-package food labelling. The labelling policy has since inspired similar measures in other countries, and evaluations of its effects are now available. At the same time, fruit and vegetable consumption at home is declining, single-person households are increasing, and more food is being consumed away from home. In this presentation, I will draw on published research to show how Chile is responding to the growing burden of malnutrition and how its food environment is evolving.
