A scientific policy focusing on agroecology and sustainable food systems.

Christophe David Vice-Dean

Research on agroecology to improve the performance of agroecosystems and design new sustainable food systems.

Objectives and outcomes:

Agroecology is considered as a frame for action and innovation to propose concepts, tools and practices to facilitate the transition towards sustainable agricultural and food systems.

Agroecological Practices - examples from France and Europe Wezel et al 20149b

ISARA-Lyon wants to support the transitions towards sustainable technical and organizational systems with transdisciplinary research activities involving:

  • Agronomy and food sciences to produce sound and sufficient food
  • Ecology for a better conservation and use of natural resources
  • Economic and social sciences for economically viable and socially fair production to enable the stakeholders of the food chain to live decently from their work.

Our research activities concern:

  • The improvement of the technical performance of agricultural and food systems,
  • The replacement of techniques, processes and matters by others based on ecological processes,
  • The design of new systems combining technical transformation and new relationships between the stakeholders of the food chain and the territories.

Our research is focused on three main objectives involving interdisciplinary activities:

  • Low input agriculture and organic agriculture as prototypes for a sustainable agriculture
  • The concerted management of hydrosystems combining agricultural and fish proudction with natural resource conservation
  • The quality control and the recognition of the identity of traditional fermented products.

Our applied research works are based on real and innovative situations, to answer the questions of economic and institutional stakeholders in order to support the development of an agriculture beneficial to territorial development.   Our research activities in agroecology are aimed to internationalize to support development projects in Europe but also in Southern Countries.

Examples of research subjects:

  • Soil fertility and performance of organic cereal production: valorization of ecological processes and technological innovations
  • Biodiversity conservation in fish farming ponds
  • Contribution of organic agriculture to the presrvation of water drinkability
  • Ecological corridors in agricultural landscapes
  • Organic agriculture and management of drinking water catchment
  • Mountain agriculture and agri-environmental measures (MERIT project)
  • TIPPING points, biodiversity, resilience and ecosystem services: PONDs as model system (TIPPINGPOND)

Isara-Lyon proposes a European MSc in agroecology, coordinated by a consortium consiting of FESIA, France and NMBU, Norway, preparing graduates to produce innovation in agroecology, to create and support sustainability in the farming and food systems. For the two-year programme a double degree is delivered.
